It is simply bizarre [...] so Cate Blanchett isn't, like, 'CaBla'? Can you explain that? Why must i find yourself in trouble with [ScarJo]?" Since it sounds good? A minimum of much better than CaBla? 'Love Actually' Hate from the 'Love Actually' Superfan

Launched on November. 14, 2003, it has not taken 'Love Actually' very lengthy whatsoever to become staple of Christmastime movie-watching. "I am so happy only at that funny concept that it is a kind of Christmas holiday movie," author/director Richard Curtis told Moviefone throughout a current interview for that new movie, 'War Equine.' "I had been searching back inside my old notes around the film, also it was just once i had thought of all of the tales ... I literally found an email saying, 'What about basically set the film at Christmas?'" And knowning that simple twist of fate, a vacation classic was created. Not too 'Love Actually' is not a totally problematic and hilariously populist movie. It's! But that is a part of its tremendous charm. Just request 'Love Actually' hater-lover Bobby Finger at TheHairpin. "It is a glossy, large-budget film with borderline-detestable exams of affection and romance that contains possibly three genuine moments that appear to become of the world, but 'Love Actually' is a terrible Christmas movie which has strong-armed its distance to the hearts of millions (including my very own) despite being absolutely terrible," creates Finger, before clearly installing why this is correct within the funniest possible way. Example, concerning the subplot including the British Pm (Hugh Grant) and something of his subordinates (Martine McCutcheon): "Unbelievable airport terminal security. So someone runs past security and jumps around the Pm and does not get shot? Sure." Browse the relaxation from the hilarity at TheHairpin.com. Your New Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame Inductees' 5 Best (and Weirdest) Film Moments

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2012 batch of new inductees, which includes The Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Laura Nyro, Donovan, and first-time qualifiers Guns ‘N Roses. That’s a varied group, but they all have one thing in common: fantastic, often bizarre appearances in motion pictures. Join us as we revisit the cinematic work of these five acts, as well as identify the key ’80s actress with strong personal ties to three of the aforementioned inductees. I’ll buy you a Snickers if you can name her offhand. The Red Hot Chili Peppers in The Chase The Chase is a definitive Bad Movie We Love, and not just because Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson are the brattiest kidnapper-kidnappee duo since the O. Henry short story “The Ransom of Red Chief.” There are also extremely silly cameos from RHCP legends Anthony Kiedis and Flea, who play van-loving burnouts. If you’re looking to buy your mother a kitschy bargain-bin movie this Christmas, consider The Chase - because when it comes to RHCP, what-they’ve-got-you’ve-got-to-give-it-to-your-mama, of course. Rewatching Kiedis’s performance, perhaps his stoner angst is attributable to his breakup with girlfriend and actress Ione Skye? Guns N’ Roses in The Dead Pool Guns N’ Roses had plenty to do in 1988 following the release of their mega-blockbuster album Appetite for Destruction in ‘87, but they squeezed in time to appear in the most forgettable (and last) Dirty Harry movie, The Dead Pool. As Clint Eastwood and Liam Neeson exchange clenched expressions, the boys of Guns ‘N Roses playfully shoot off weaponry on a boat. Nice acting face, Izzy! Beastie Boys’s Ad-Rock in Lost Angels The Beastie Boys are just damn lovable. Not only are they some of the most consistently brilliant musicians of the past three decades, but they’re pretty unpretentious and fun for a group that wants to save Tibet. Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, the group’s guitarist, even embarked on a small acting career beginning with the 1989 low-budget film Lost Angels, starring as Tim ‘Chino’ Doolan, a troubled LA youth who makes a connection with a psychiatrist (Donald Sutherland!) in a private psychiatric hospital. Here, Ad-Rock enjoys some bathroom stall sex with a cute new friend. Rewatching Ad-Rock’s performance, it’s clear we’re seeing some of the sexual passion he’d soon experience with his future wife, actress Ione Skye. Laura Nyro in Monterey Pop The inimitable, still-underrated Laura Nyro influenced many confessional singer/songwriters in pop music, and that includes everyone from Tori Amos and Sinead O’Connor to Elton John, Elvis Costello, and Alice Cooper. Kanye West even sampled her song “Save the Country” on “The Glory” from Graduation. Though rumors have circulated that a 19-year-old Nyro bombed at the hugely transformational Monterey Pop Festival of 1967 (where Jimi Hendrix twanged a tripped-out “Wild Thing” and set his guitar on fire), footage from the official Monterey Pop documentary proves she was stellar. Enjoy a few bars of “Wedding Bell Blues” (one of the big hits she wrote for The Fifth Dimension) and the haunting “Poverty Train.” Donovan in The Pied Piper If becoming the first major rock star to be busted for marijuana possession isn’t legacy enough, Donovan’s list of hit singles (including “Mellow Yellow,” “Sunshine Superman,” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man”) cements his legend. His calming, but subversive voice is unforgettable, and it’s perfect for his role in the strange ‘72 feature The Pied Piper, where he played the titular Hamelin resident. I wonder if he was inspired to take part in The Pied Piper because of the birth of his daughter, actress Ione Skye. Oscar De La Hoya: Alec Baldwin Airline Snafu Blown Out Of Proportion

First Published: December 7, 2011 3:44 PM EST Credit: WireImage Caption Alec Baldwin / inset: Oscar De La HoyaLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Fellow first class passenger Oscar De La Hoya, who witnessed Alec Baldwins airline Words With Friends snafu on Tuesday, said the whole situation was exaggerated. Following the incident, where Alec was told by a flight attendant to turn off his iPad while playing the popular online game and then eventually placed on another flight, American Airlines released a statement. This passenger declined to turn off his cell phone when asked to do so at the appropriate time. The passenger ultimately stood up (with the seat belt light still on for departure) and took his phone into the planes lavatory. He slammed the lavatory door so hard, the cockpit crew heard it and became alarmed, even with the cockpit door closed and locked, the airline said in a statement posted on their Facebook account. They immediately contacted the cabin crew to check on the situation. The passenger was extremely rude to the crew, calling them inappropriate names and using offensive language. Given the facts above, the passenger was removed from the flight and denied boarding. The boxing great, however, had a different take on the situation. There wasnt no slamming of doors or nothing like that. I mean, it was, I think, blown out of proportion, Oscar told Access Hollywood on Wednesday. I dont know him very well but he seemed like a good guy. He wanted to play his words game! I mean, thats all he wanted to do! Alecs rep, Matthew Hiltzik, took to Twitter to discuss the situation, Tweeting, hey @AMERICAN_AA: How come ok 4 other 1st class passengers 2 tweet while @alecbaldwin asked to leave while using his device? #hypocrisy 1st clss passngers can tweet, but @alecbaldwin asked to leave? Following the incident, Alec deactivated his account, but not before sending out one last Tweet of a photo with a caption that read, Let Alec play. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. Which Book Does Steven Spielberg Admit He 'Softened' in Movie Form?

Steven Spielberg is likely a man of few regrets, but even the Oscar-winning director is appearing dubious about one of his major works. In a new interview, Spielberg admits he “softened” the sensuality of one of his film’s source material to preserve a PG-13 rating. And maybe the film suffered for it. Care to guess which opus he’s talking about? In a talk with EW, Spielberg opines about exploring — or rather, not exploring — the relationship between Shug Avery (Margaret Avery) and Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) in his adaptation of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple. The film drew 11 Oscar nominations at the time (and famously won none), but Spielberg claims he caught flak for skimping on the intimacy between the characters. “There were certain things in the [lesbian] relationship between Shug Avery and Celie that were very finely detailed in Alice’s book, that I didn’t feel we could get a [PG-13] rating… And I was shy about it. In that sense, perhaps I was the wrong director to acquit some of the more sexually honest encounters between Shug and Celie, because I did soften those. I basically took something that was extremely erotic and very intentional, and I reduced it to a simple kiss. I got a lot of criticism for that.” But does he actually regret making the relationship less sexual? Big no. Asked if he’d do it differently now, Spielberg says, “I wouldn’t, no. That kiss is consistent with the tonality, from beginning to end, of The Color Purple that I adapted.” I want Spielberg to compensate for this slight with a naughty scene in Lincoln. Maybe Mary Todd gives roadhead to Abe in the stagecoach where he wrote the Gettysburg address. “A score for the fourscore!” says Peter Travers. Starship Military Remake Planned

Would you like to learn more?Someplace, hidden deep in the middle of Hollywood, a pulsing brain bug is gradually planning to remake every move ever created. Well, the look is fitting a minimum of, since someone has become likely to tackle a brand new version of Starship Military. First splattering across our screens in 1997, Starship Military remains probably the most fun records within the Paul Verhoeven bloodstream, breasts 'n' tanks era which created the kind of Fundamental Instinct, RoboCop and Showgirls (we did not the tanks counseled me on the watch's screen, now did we?) For those its OTT action, Military handled to become a satire of Robert Heinlein-style sci-fi, although having a subtlety bypass, since Verhoeven's Hollywood output wouldn't understand what subtlety meant even when it had Word During The Day toilet tissue. The film finds mankind incompatible with giant, marauding bugs, who enjoy swarming human armies and starting giant plasma poops into space. Unfamiliar for that calibre of their acting performances, it had been nonetheless an opportunity for Neil Patrick Harris to obtain some operate in time before his large comeback. The primary brain behind the revival is prolific producer Neal Moritz, the guy behind the short & The Furious films and many 1000 other game titles. It isn't really shocking that he'd use Starship Military, since he's already shepherding one Verhoeven remake towards the screen with Total Recall. Now he's hired Thor/X-Males: Top Class contributing factors Ashley Edward Burns and Zack Stentz to possess a crack in a new script. Question whether they can match original author Erectile dysfunction Neumeier's cheeky wit?[[Poll559]]

Hollywood hard-wired for hype and hoopla

You will find many strange tribal traditions at this time around of the year. One annual tradition may be the article through the annoyed media member who wags a finger at honours campaigns, shocked, shocked at the concept people are attempting to buy an award. I recieve it. Some find campaigning distasteful -- researchers do not take out advertisements within the Colonial Journal of drugs, advocating "for the consideration in most groups" for that Nobel Prize. However, showbiz ain't medicine. Am I in support of campaigning? Obviously! Am I being impartial? Absolutely not! Some of Variety's earnings originates from these campaigns.Only one can play the role of objective. Marketing is a component of Hollywood's DNA. Fox did not launch "Avatar" silently, saying, "Gee, I really hope people realize the film is opening now.Inch They marketed the hell from it, and also got results. Selling is a component of each and every film, TV series, album, vidgame or online project. It is the Hollywood way and it is the American way. Try not to take my word for this. This is actually the description in one of my personal favorite authors on the entire process of choosing Oscars: "Technically, they're chosen, but really they aren't made the decision through whatever artistic and critical knowledge Hollywood could happen to possess. They're ballyhooed, pressed, screamed, screamed, as well as in every way propagandized in to the awareness from the voters so continuously, within the days prior to the final balloting, that everything except the golden aura from the box office is forgotten."That essay, known as "Oscar Evening in Hollywood," was compiled by Raymond Chandler in 1950 for that British film magazine Sight and Seem. Yes, 61 years back campaigning and all sorts of the lamenting about crassness are as old as Oscar itself. Campaigns have two goals: to goad voters into visiting a film in order to help remind them why they loved it. AMPAS people do not have time for you to see every movie, and campaigns essentially say, "Make certain the thing is this film before you decide to election." Special tests, trade advertisements and screeners have been in existence for age range. So has got the meet-and-greet-the-challengers technique, however it has tremendously elevated previously couple of years. It will likely be interesting to ascertain if campaigns change within the next couple of years, because 2 yrs ago, Mo'nique and Christoph Waltz underlined the truth that you will find no rules.Mo'nique was working, and her absence around the kudos circuit grew to become a place of pride: I am not going to try and woo voters, allow them to election on merit. And she or he won!Waltz was around, but he did not give anyone-to-one interviews. And that he won!In comparison, the "Hurt Locker" team that year, and also the "King's Speech" team this past year, were fittings around the honours circuit. Plus they won! Campaign strategists watch one another and imitate success, and also the non-appearance of those those who win defied the usual understanding. Did the hands-trembling really make a difference? I do not believe Tom Hooper won because he's intelligent and pleasant (though he's both). In my opinion people chosen for him since they loved his work. About ten years ago, campaigners got an identical mixed message: "The Pianist's" Adrien Brody was everywhere, and that he won. Director Roman Polanski was nowhere to appear, and that he won. Why bother campaigning? Strategists wish to show they are spending so much time with respect to their customers. Clients see rivals spending so much time and think, "Uh-oh, I better do this too." And, most importantly, nobody really wants to take risks. The PricewaterhouseCoopers individuals are resolutely mother about past Oscar results. But Ernst & Youthful partner Andy Purchase last August confirmed towards the L.A. Occasions that in a number of major Emmy groups previously ten years that "it has been one ballot" that determined the those who win.The lesson out of your civics class was true: Each election matters. So challengers, strategists, professionals and agents use every technique possible looking for that elusive single election which makes the main difference.Am I penning this column to drum up advertisements? No, honours budgets were set a very long time ago, which is not likely to change that. Will I want to protect the Academy along with other honours groups? No, they are doing fine without me. However I bristle in the "you can purchase an award" articles because I resent the idea of "individuals Hollywood heathens are in it again!" Every single day I'm amazed at the venality and stupidity of some showbiz people. And each day I'm impressed with a few folks' intelligence, sensitivity and kindness. Quite simply, show folk are human, not sub-human.But things i really resent is people accepting the usual understanding. Should you say something frequently enough, individuals will accept it as being fact, and also the usual cliches -- "it is simply a recognition contest" and "he simply bought his award" -- happen to be repeated so frequently, lots of people accept is as true. As well as for lazy media people, it is a more sexy story than: "Honours voters election using their conscience!"I believe most voters are sincere. I do not think that, within the good reputation for honours, anybody ever stated, "I did not like this film, however i love the advertisements and also the party was great, so I am likely to election for this." Try not to request me, request Raymond Chandler. For the reason that 1950 essay, he involves a fascinating conclusion: "All of this is nice democracy of the sort. We elect Congressmen and Presidents in exactly the same, so why wouldn't you stars, cameramen, authors, and all sorts of the relaxation of those who've related to the building of pictures? As we permit noise, bally-hoo, and bad theater to influence us in picking a those who are to operate the nation, why must we resist exactly the same techniques in picking a meritorious achievement within the film business?"Oddly enough, in virtually every political election, commentators will lament a dark tone from the campaigning or even the amounts spent, but couple of really wonder if it's appropriate to campaign. So allow me to find out if I have got this straight: It's OK to campaign for that presidency from the U.S., but Oscar should be held to some greater standard? So, my very much beloved entertainment-journalist co-workers: Bear in mind you will probably have heard something lots of occasions, but that does not mean it's correct. And, incidentally, I am told that individuals do campaign for Nobel Awards, frequently a lot more shamelessly compared to film biz. That's reassuring, I suppose. Contact Timothy M. Pauline Kael Biographer: Why Writing About the Legendary Film Critic Was a 'Tremendous Challenge' (Q&A)

Brian Kellow has been receiving praise for his biography of legendary film critic Pauline Kael, which hits stores Thursday. In the book, titled Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark, the writer sheds lights on light on the voice that championed Bonnie and Clyde,"her failed Hollywood adventure and her battles with William Shawn.our editor recommendsPauline Kael: A Life in the Dark: Book ReviewHow Hollywood Seduced and Abandoned Critic Pauline Kael (Exclusive Book Excerpt)NY Film Festival Wrap: Special Events, Fortuitous Encounters and Spontaneous CombustionHow Pauline Kael Might Vote: No on 'Social Network,' Maybe on 'Black Swan'Pauline Kael's Editor: 'She'd Laugh at 'Black Swan,' Vote for 'The Fighter' Kellow sat down with The Hollywood Reporter's chief film critic Todd McCarthy to talk about the challenges involved in writing the book, her naivete when it came to Hollywood and what didn't make the book. The Hollywood Reporter: What first lit up the idea in you to embark on this project? Kellow: I began reading Pauline Kael's reviews when I was around 13. She had a voice that spoke to me immediately. I read her for years and committed great chunks of her reviews to memory. I prefer to write biographies that to some extent represent fresh territory. Setting down Pauline's life seemed like a tremendous challenge -- which it was, as it turned out. BOOK REVIEW: Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark THR:Has there ever been a biography of a film critic before? What about critics in other fields? What made writing about a critic, someone who by nature is a reactor, different from the other subjects you've tackled? Kellow: I don't know that there has been a biography of a movie critic until now. There have been biographies of theater critics -- Kathleen Tynan wrote a wonderful one about her husband, Kenneth. One of my favorite aspects of working on Pauline Kael: A Life in the Dark was the chance to track the influences that helped form her taste and style. Also, writing this book gave me a great opportunity to delve into the film history of the 1960s and '70s. It was exciting to show how what was happening on the screen really was, to a great extent, Pauline's life. THR: Other than Pauline's published writing, what other material existed in archives or her personal collection for you to draw upon? Letters, diaries, datebooks, etc.? Kellow: I had great luck in having access to Pauline's extensive archive at the Lilly Library at Indiana University in Bloomington. It's a treasure trove. There are very few letters from Pauline herself, but she seems to have saved nearly every letter she received -- even letters from fans and readers. She always said she didn't want a biography written, but she certainly saw to it that her life was meticulously catalogued, so I'm not sure I believe her. EXCLUSIVE BOOK EXCERPT: How Hollywood Seduced and Abandoned Critic Pauline Kael THR: The early life material is particularly fascinating. How did you learn about her childhood, family, early responses to literature and movies, her difficult relationships at Berkeley and subsequent struggles before belatedly breaking through professionally? Kellow: Research. I went to Petaluma, Calif., and learned a great deal about the community of Jewish chicken ranchers in which she grew up. I was also very lucky: I found her ex-husband, Edward Landberg, who was still living in Berkeley. He was her only husband, although she liked to confuse people by telling them she had been married three times. As her daughter Gina said, "She loved a good story." I was also very lucky in rounding up a lot of people who had worked with her when she was programming the Berkeley Cinema Guild, the nation's first twin art house. That period of the mid- to late 1950s is one of my favorite parts of the book. THR: I never got the sense that Pauline was ever really in love with anyone. And nearly all the relationships she did have, with men who were essentially gay, were set-ups for disaster. How did you come to see view her emotional life? Did she just sublimate everything else to movies? Kellow: I think Pauline was in love early on. I certainly think she was in love with the poet Robert Horan, who was gay. But I think she felt, quite early, that love between two people never lasted. And let's face it, often it doesn't! I think she learned early on not to trust in love. Her love of the movies was something else. That she could count on, and trust. I've tried not to hammer the whole seduction-of-the-movies idea too hard in my book. But there's no escaping it. PHOTOS: Netflix's 10 Most-Rented Movies of All Time THR: You mention that in earlier years she was constantly writing little plays, stories, screen ideas she'd send to Hollywood and so on. Did you read much of her creative writing in these areas? Was there any merit to any of it? Any way you can describe it? Kellow: Pauline would be the first to admit that her attempts at creative writing weren't very good. And they aren't. I've read carefully through all the pieces that survive. They're arch and full of ideas and attitudes, but they just don't move dramatically. The characters just don't have the breath of life. Related Topics Pauline Kael 1 2 next last

Photo: Does Scarlett Johansson Look Like Our Sexiest Movie Alien Yet?

Over the course of her career, Scarlett Johansson has played a sexy Dutch muse, a sexy clone, a sexy journalism student, a sexy Boleyn sister and a sexy, spandex-clad Roman spy. (She is so sexy that David Fincher did not cast her in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for fear that audiences wouldn’t be able “to wait for her to take her clothes off.”) So it’s not surprising that in Jonathan Glazer’s upcoming film Under The Skin, the bombshell doesn’t just play an alien — she plays an alien who uses a voluptuous human body to ensnare male prey. Take a look at the first photo of Johansson in character to see how she stacks up against cinema’s other most titillating extraterrestrials. Here, Johannsson seems to be channeling a few different sexy alien attributes: the ultimate femme fatale quality of Natasha Henstridge’s Sil in Species with the edginess of Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo in The Fifth Element with the total disregard for PETA-approved outerwear of Alex Pettyfer’s John Smith in I Am Number Four. Do you think that makes her the sexiest movie extraterrestrial of them all. Before weighing in below, be sure to consider Jeff Bridges in Starman? Under The Skin — not to be confused with Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In — will be the first feature from Glazer since 2004’s Birth starring Nicole Kidman. Adapted from Michael Faber’s novel of the same title, Under The Skin stars Johansson as Isserley, an extraterrestrial sent to Earth by a rich corporation on her planet to pick up unwary hitchhikers. Through her terrestrial adventures though, Isserley ultimately meets a man who convinces her to change her view on hitchhikers and breaks her heart. Obviously. Under The Skin is currently shooting in Scotland. [ICYDK via Playlist]

Toronto: Content Acquires Foreign Territories On Lovely Molly

Content has acquired foreign rights on Lovely Molly, the genre film written and directed by Blair Witch Project‘s Eduardo Sanchez. A domestic distribution deal is coming. Lovely Molly made its debut in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival last month. The title character (Gretchen Lodge) is a newlywed who returns to her long abandoned family home and is hit with scary reminders of her nightmarish childhood that quickly color her new life. She snaps, basically, into a descent into an evil that is one part psychosis and another part possession. WME Global’s Graham Taylor and and BHDRL’s Stuart Rosenthal made the deal. The film’s produced by Robin Cowie, Gregg Hale, Jane Fleming, and Mark Ordesky. The intention is to employ the same kind of viral marketing that helped turned Blair Witch into such a big hit. “We were shocked by Gretchen Lodge’s extraordinary performance, it’s truly a sensational debut, in this powerfun and intense film from Eduardo Sanchez,” Content’s Jamie Carmichael said. “We’re delighted to be working with the Haxan and Amber teams on what promises to be a highly innovative and compelling campaign.” Content will sell the film at next week’s AFM. After the eye-opening $54 million opening weekend of Paranormal Activity 3, there should be a captive audience.

'Paranormal Activity 3': By the Numbers

As you may have read earlier on Friday, Tim Burton is designing a balloon for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade this year. Spoiler: it looks exactly like what you'd expect a balloon designed by Tim Burton to look like. But how did the prolific director wind up earning this prestigious -- if slightly unexpected -- honor? Find out that and four other fun facts ahead. 1. The balloon has a fast-food friendly name... Burton named the balloon "B. Boy," though friends can simply refer to him (it?) as "B." 2. ...as well as an intricate backstory dreamed up by Burton himself. As the 'Alice in Wonderland' relayed to NY Times writer Dave Itzkoff, "B. Boy" has quite a history. According to an origin story dreamed up by Mr. Burton, B. was created, Frankenstein's monster-style, from the leftover balloons used in children's parties at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Forbidden from playing with other children because of his jagged teeth and crazy-quilt stitching, B. retreated to a basement lair, where he obsesses over Albert Lamorisse's film 'The Red Balloon' and dreams that he, too, will be able to fly someday. 3. Parade organizers wooed Burton for quite some time... Burton has been a sort-of Moby Dick for parade organizers, as they've been trying to get him to create a balloon in the parade since 2004. The efforts ramped up after Burton's successful exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in the spring of 2010. Eventually, they even showed Burton illustrations from Tony Sarg, a balloon designer in the '20s and '30s who used an aesthetic similar to the director. 4. ...and then only had one request. "The only guideline we gave him is: Try to stay away from something skinny and pointy," Macy's parade creative director Bill Schermerhorn told the Times. 5. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are not involved. Yet. [via NYT/ArtsBeat] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Suit vs. Cinemark reinstated

A legal appeal by Palm Desert, Calif.'s Cinemas Palme d'Or arthouse theater has the potential to open bookings by independent theaters if the desert plex prevails. Cinemas Palme d'Or is a 10-plex owned by radio host Steve Mason, actor Bryan Cranston, producer Alise Benjamin-Mauritzson and theater operator Brian Tabor. The cinemas sued Century Theaters (later purchased by Cinemark) in 2006, saying the large circuit was denying bookings to the arthouse -- a practice known as circuit dealing -- through Century's threats to retaliate against distribs by denying them critical runs in other markets. Though the initial suit was dismissed in state superior court in 2008, the California State Court of Appeals recently ruled to reinstate the suit, overturning the lower court's decision. Last week, the court denied a motion by Cinemark for a rehearing, opening the door to resume the discovery process so the trial can proceed in Los Angeles Superior Court. "I believe this case has a chance to really impact our industry and help to preserve independent theaters all over the country," co-owner Steve Mason said in a statement. Although Cinemas Palme d'Or said bookings became somewhat easier after the suit was filed, the partners said it continues to be an issue. The multiplex is currently showing studio releases such as "Contagion" and "The Help." Mason said the cinemas have been able to book only very small releases, with Cinemark booking most commercial releases into the nearby River multiplex. Cinemark, meanwhile, has claimed its business practices are lawful and that the appellate court ruling is contrary to modern antitrust law. Distribution executives may be called to testify during the next round in court. Other independent theater owners, who likewise feel at a disadvantage to the major theater chains, are following the case, a favorable ruling in which could help level the playing field for smaller exhibs. NBCs Bob Greenblatt Not Hurrying To Wield Cancellation Axe On Playboy, Free Agents

There has been rampant gossips now that NBC is rescheduling underperforming new series The Playboy Club and Free Agents, that have drenched 2 and three low-ranked airings, correspondingly, shedding double-numbers week-to-week. But despite speculation, word is NBC won’t be tugging any new series now as NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt really wants to give all freshmen additional time. That's a departure from traditional network MO within the situation of fall shows with your underwhelming launches. This past year, Fox’s Lone Star and ABC’s My Generation were canceled after 2 airings each. They came single. and 1.1 demo rating, correspondingly, right before these were drawn. Now, Free Agents and also the Playboy Club published single. along with a 1.3, correspondingly. But regardless of the shows’ harsh rankings prospects, they're likely to get another chance. Word is the fact that Greenblatt really wants to send a note towards the creative community he can give their shows on NBC every possible opportunity to succeed. (And individuals aren't even shows he'd developed.) Greenblatt originates from the cable world, where series receive a season-long term to locate their footing before a choice on the future is created. Within the facts from the broadcast business, keeping a higher-finish drama or comedy around the air in a 1 demo rating level for over a handful of days is prohibitive. But, since audiences continue to be sampling shows and fine-tuning their viewing designs for that year, NBC would like to hold back for your process to stay before sacking the greatest underachievers. (Additionally to Playboy and Free Agents, also at risk may be the network’s Prime Suspect, which opened up having a disappointing 1.9 18-49 rating a week ago.) NBC’s Greenblatt demonstrated similar persistence in mid-season with low-ranked new comedy Perfect Couples, although the Paul Reiser show was canceled after 2 episodes because the broadly panned comedy began at 1.1 rating and dipped to some .9 within the second airing. For Playboy Club, there's been lots of speculation the new John Williams prime time magazine may be eyed like a alternative within the Monday 10 PM slot. As the new program is less than ready yet, which makes it unlikely that it may be summoned up immediately, it seems its premiere is going to be prior to the initial mid-season target date.

Help Movieline Caption This Dark Shadows Photo of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton

We may have one Johnny Depp adaptation fast approaching (The Rum Diary opens in theaters October 28), but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about the other Johnny Depp adaptation down the line. Dark Shadows, the actor’s next and eighth collaboration with Tim Burton will bring the forgotten ’60s goth soap opera of the same name to life. Although it isn’t due out until May 2012, Empire does have a sneak peak of the behind-the-scenes action. Do you have your captioning pens handy? Good, because here is a photo of Depp in full bloody character make-up as Burton directs him. Depp plays Barnabas Collins, an 18th century vampire who awakens to find himself in the 20th century. The supernatural drama also stars Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Lee Miller, Chlo Moretz and, of course, Helena Bonham Carter. Like the original series that aired on ABC, Burton’s Dark Shadows will also feature werewolves, warlocks, witches, zombies, and time travel. Oh my! But enough about the cast, let’s get to captioning. Ready, set, go! For a few other Dark Shadows photos, visit Empire Online. [via Empire Online]

R.E.M. Remembrances: 31 Chart Milestones of Their 31-Year Career (Video)

After more than three decades and 15 studio albums, alternative cornerstone R.E.M. announced its breakup yesterday (Sept. 21).our editor recommendsR.E.M. Splits After More Than 30 YearsR.E.M.'s Breakup: Reactions to the SplitR.E.M. to Release Greatest Hits Album "A wise man once said, 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave'," the band's lead singer Michael Stipe wrote on the band's official website. "We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it. "I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way." In celebration of the band's 31 years, here are 31 chart highlights that narrate the storyline of the group's many successes on Billboard surveys. Let's R.E.M.-ember: May 14, 1983 R.E.M. makes its first appearance on a Billboard chart, as debut set Murmur enters the Billboard 200. The set would peak at No. 36. May 21, 1983 A week later, the Athens, Ga., band dents its first Billboard songs chart, as "Radio Free Europe" debuts on Mainstream Rock. It would rise to No. 25 on the chart. July 23, 1983 R.E.M. makes its unassuming Billboard Hot 100 introduction, as "Europe" starts at No. 90. It would reach No. 78 in a five-week run. May 5, 1984 Second set Reckoning arrives on the Billboard 200. The album would climb to No. 27. May 26, 1984 "Reckoning" single, and an eventual alternative classic like "Europe," "so. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)," begins on Mainstream Rock, where it would reach No. 43. It would cross to a No. 85 peak on the Hot 100. June 29, 1985 Another summer, another album that would help build R.E.M.'s loyal following: Fables of the Reconstruction enters the Billboard 200 on its way to a No. 28 peak. July 6, 1985 Fables lead track "Can't Get There From Here" begins its ascent to a No. 14 peak on Mainstream Rock. Follow-up "Driver 8" would motor to No. 22. Aug. 23, 1986 Lifes Rich Pageant bows on the Billboard 200. It would go on to reach No. 21, the band's highest peak on the tally to that point. Aug. 30, 1986 R.E.M. scores its first top 10 on a Billboard chart, as "Fall on Me" rises 12-9 on Mainstream Rock. The jangly melodic rocker, which hinted at the band's pop radio potential, would bound to No. 5 on Mainstream Rock and manage a No. 94 Hot 100 peak. Fellow Pageant contender "Superman" would reach No. 17 on Mainstream Rock. Sept. 26, 1987 R.E.M. begins its rise to its first Billboard 200 top 10, as Document debuts, eventually peaking at No. 10, its first top 10 album. Dec. 5, 1987 A major milestone: Casey Kasem announces on American Top 40 that "The One I Love" has become R.E.M.'s first Hot 100 top 10, jumping from No. 12 to its No. 9 peak. Long a staple of college rock radio, the band that week is sandwiched between pop/R&B divas Whitney Houston and Jody Watley. Dec. 19, 1987 Today one of the band's most revered anthems, "It's The End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," reaches No. 16 on Mainstream Rock. Sept. 10, 1988 While the group doesn't rank on the maiden listing, Billboard launches the Alternative chart, fueled by the modern rock format's newfound proven viability - which R.E.M. helped solidify. Twenty-three years later, the band boasts 26 entries on the chart, including 15 top 10s and six No. 1s. Nov. 26, 1988 Perhaps R.E.M.'s most landmark week to that point: Green, its first album for Warner Bros. after recording for the independent I.R.S. label, enters the Billboard 200. Concurrently, the band celebrates its first No. 1s on Billboard song charts: "Orange Crush" reaches the top of Mainstream Rock and Alternative. Jan. 28, 1989 "Stand" becomes the then-quartet's second Alternative No. 1. Two weeks later, it tops Mainstream Rock. In April, it would become R.E.M.'s then-highest-charting Hot 100 hit, reaching No. 6. March 30, 1991 Building upon the success of Document and Green, Out of Time bursts onto the Billboard 200 at No. 27. Seven weeks later, R.E.M. completes the journey from the college radio circuit to, for the first time, the Billboard 200 summit. The album would go on to sell 4.5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, and win the best alternative album Grammy Award. April 6, 1991 Time lead single "Losing My Religion" roars onto the Hot 100, eventually reaching No. 4 - the band's best career performance on the chart. The song produces a best pop vocal/group Grammy Award and, spotlighting R.E.M.'s newfound reach, becomes its only Adult Contemporary chart hit, peaking at No. 28. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion by Warner-Music June 22, 1991 After "Religion" logged eight weeks atop Alternative, tying "Orange Crush" for the band's longest reign, "Texarkana" reaches No. 4. The song shows that even a track not sung by Michael Stipe - in this case, Mike Mills (its writer) - can become a fan favorite. Sept. 28, 1991 "Shiny Happy People," featuring vocals from fellow Athens alternative singer Kate Pierson of the B-52's, bounces to No. 10 on the Hot 100. Oct. 24. 1992 Automatic for the People blasts onto the Billboard 200 at No. 2. At 3.5 million sold to-date, it's R.E.M.'s second-best-selling set. Nov. 14, 1992 Despite its dour vibe, a departure from the band's catalog of more generally upbeat fare, Automatic lead single "Drive" wraps a five-week command of Alternative. Dec. 19, 1992 "Ignoreland" peaks at No. 5 on Alternative, followed by three more Automatic chart entries: "Man on the Moon" (No. 2), "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" (No. 24) and "Everybody Hurts" (No. 21). Nov. 6, 1993 "Hurts" peaks at No. 29 on the Hot 100. Now considered one of R.E.M.'s signature songs, the inspirational ballad was remade by the all-star Helping Haiti cast last year (coordinated by Simon Cowell). The charity single features vocal turns by, among others, Jon Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue and Rod Stewart. R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts by Warner-Music Dec. 11, 1993 A match made in indie-rock heaven: "Photograph," featuring then-10,000 Maniacs frontwoman Natalie Merchant, peaks at No. 9 on Alternative. The track was released on the Born to Choose compilation. Oct. 15, 1994 Sporting a crunchier electric-based sound, Monster becomes R.E.M.'s second album to crown the Billboard 200 - and the only one to begin at the summit. The set has sold 2.9 million copies to-date. Oct. 22, 1994 The hits keep coming: "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" completes a five-week stay atop Alternative. Follow-up "Bang and Blame" would go on to lead the list for three weeks. Sept. 28, 1996 New Adventures in Hi-Fi enters the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Brooding experimental lead single "E-Bow the Letter," featuring Patti Smith, would reach No. 2 on Alternative. The hookier "Bittersweet Me" would rise to No. 28 on Pop Songs; the cut, however, would mark R.E.M.'s last visit to the mainstream top 40 radio tally. Nov. 14, 1998 Up opens at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. With R.E.M. having graduated to a home base at adult alternative radio, the swaying "Daysleeper" would go on to top the Triple A chart for two weeks. Dec. 25, 1999 As the band feted Andy Kauffman in its hit "Man on the Moon," the movie of the same name about the late comedian is accompanied by a sequel song. "The Great Beyond" begins an eight-week rule on Triple A. June 2, 2001 R.E.M. reaches the Billboard 200's top 10 in a third decade, as Reveal debuts at No. 6. Around the Sun would follow in 2004 (No. 13) and Accelerate would charge in at No. 2 in 2008. The lead single from the lattermost set, "Supernatural Superserious," would mark the group's return to the Alternative chart after a seven-year gap, advancing to No. 21. March 26, 2011 R.E.M.'s final studio album, Collapse Into Now, jumps aboard the Billboard 200 at No. 5. First track "Mine Smell Like Honey" would peak at No. 8 on Triple A and follow-up "Uberlin," No. 26. In a closing piece of chart symmetry, the band's final single spent its last week on the chart dated May 14, 2011 - 28 years to the day after R.E.M. made its first appearance on a Billboard chart. You'll Never Guess What Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Calling His Memoir

If you were Arnold Schwarzenegger, what would you call your memoir? It would have to be something juicy -- after all, you just got caught with a love child. Hmm...how about naming it after one of your famous movies? Good call! The former governor of California plans on titling his upcoming memoir, 'Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.' Before you groan at the idea of a Schwarzenegger-penned book bearing the name of his 1990 sci-fi actioner (marketing idea: "Get your ass... to the bookstore!") note that the title could be worse. Ahnold could have named the book something like, 'Collateral Damage,' 'Predator,' or even 'Happy Anniversary and Goodbye.' (We didn't make that last one up -- it was a 1974 TV movie Schwarzenegger starred in.) [via EW] Image courtesy of AP

Robert Guillaume Remembers The Lion King and His Struggle to Find Good Roles for African-Americans in Film

On a recent day in Los Angeles the charismatic, now-83-year-old Robert Guillaume recalled with little effort and copious charm the skepticism he initially felt at the idea of a cartoon film about a lion who becomes the king of the animals, for which the filmmakers wanted him to voice a wise mandrill-baboon. “When they first described it to me I wasn’t all that impressed with the idea,” he admitted. “It didn’t make a lot of sense.” Eventually the parts combined into Disney’s 1994 classic The Lion King, and Guillaume saw what made it all so special. “I still think it’s kind of a miracle, that it must have touched people very deeply when they first saw it.” Indeed: Disney’s The Lion King eventually became one of the Mouse House’s most beloved animated films of the period spanning 1989-1999, when films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas turned into worldwide successes and hit multi-media franchises. With indelible songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, handsome African-set visuals, and familial themes aimed at children, The Lion King easily won the hearts of a generation of young moviegoers. (It will be re-released theatrically in a limited two-week engagement before becoming available in 3-D on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3-D.) Movieline sat down with the award-winning stage and television veteran to discuss his work over 17 years ago as The Lion King’s sage baboon shaman Rafiki, how he finally found the right voice after weeks of searching, why he considers the film a “miracle” and how the lack of decent roles for African-American actors decades ago switched his focus from film to other mediums in which he thrived. When The Lion King was first described to you, was there something that made it sound special to you? Could you tell back then that it would become such a beloved film? I didn’t know that it was going to be a special project. It sort of grew on me. When they first described it to me I wasn’t all that impressed with the idea. It didn’t make a lot of sense. “The Lion King.” And when they said they wanted me to be in it, I thought they meant they wanted me to play the Lion King! I began to fantasize about that, and then they quickly brought me down and said, “You’re going to play the monkey.” I said, “I’ve been playing monkeys all my life.” At what moment did you realize that you had something distinctive? After we searched to find the voice for the character — we did that for about two weeks — and we finally hit on something that we thought would work, we came up with the voice and characterization that was Rafiki. That was both a relief and a revelation. It was a relief because it said, okay — when they said, “We think that will work,” it meant the search was over and I had at least another day to work. And the revelation came later, when I heard and saw the character that we had created. Saw it in interaction, in the story. And that’s when I began to get the idea that hey — we’ve really got something here! The process of making an animated film is like that, with so many pieces assimilated together over a long period time and not much of an idea of how the final product might turn out. Do you remember the first time you saw the finished film and what you thought of it? I don’t know if I felt anything all that special about it, but I do remember thinking that it works. I didn’t know at that time how impressive that story would be, as people saw it. I still think it’s kind of a miracle, that it must have touched people very deeply when they first saw it. And I think that manifests itself in children. Children seeing it, and they see those animals and they see the story that doesn’t talk down to them but still talks to them at their level — I think that is very impressive about that story. As someone who was 13 when The Lion King came out, I can confirm that it’s one of the films of that generation that really stayed with young people. I wonder if kids these days feel that way about their films. I don’t think so. I think The Lion King is special. And I think that is, again, a miracle. Because miracles in things like this, they happen because a number of things come together at the same time, at the same point. Good storytelling, great characterizations, animation and elements that by themselves might not mean that much, but coming together it’s a force. And it’s beautiful to see when you see a story like The Lion King. I have not been impressed as much by any cartoon. It seems to speak to adults as well more than a lot of children’s animated films do. I think so too, and I’d be reluctant to say that anywhere else. [Laughs] You have this great, iconic voice — this wonderful voice. It’s such a rare thing. People know your voice. I think they would know anyone’s voice if they’d heard it over and over long enough! Really! There’s special, unmistakable quality to your voice. [Smiling] OK, I’ll accept that. You’ve done a lot of voice work during your career, and also a lot of television and stage work. Looking back at your work over the years, would you have liked to have done more film as well? Yes. It’s where, had I had my druthers, I would have put myself. In a good film, of some sort. But when I think of the terrain that African-Americans have been forced to reside in, in film, it’s not all that promising. I didn’t see it as promising. Because I see a vast, vast terrain, but I don’t see African-Americans existing in much of it. Has that changed much, do you think, to where we are today? No, I don’t think so. So you just found better opportunities for yourself elsewhere? Yeah… but I was never offered much in film. I did a few things, but they never amounted to much. You mentioned that it took a while to find the right voice for Rafiki. Why was that the case, and what sort of different directions were you going in? I think it’s part of the normal process, because we had nothing else to relate it to. Make it sound like such and such — you couldn’t go in any direction like that. Because we didn’t know, with all these animals and all this space, where are we? And I think in some strange, or not so strange kind of way, the voice of Rafiki sets the story in Africa. Partly due to the sageness of his character, and his identity as a shaman type of figure. Mmm-hmm. And I think in a lot of ways it was the accent itself. I couldn’t use just any foreign accent. I had been playing around in my head at parties and things, trying to sound like a Jamaican or something like that, and I was never any good at that. I never was able to put together a decent Jamaican accent, because I love it so much! But this was my interpretation of that kind of accent, at that time. And while I fell short of Jamaican, it was another ersatz character put together that worked, oddly enough.
