Breaking Dawn Part 1 Opens Big But Can't Break Twilight Box Office Record

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 The latest Twilight installment debuted to huge numbers over the weekend, but failed to eclipse the record set by New Moon, Box Office Mojo reports. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 grossed an estimated $139.5 million in its first weekend of release, just below New Moon's opening weekend record of $142.7 million two years ago. Breaking Dawn still managed to become the fifth-biggest box office opening of all time. Another new sequel, Happy Feet Two, premiered to less impressive numbers, with $22 million (the first opened to $41.5 million in 2006). Immortals tops Jack and Jill at the box office Coming in third place, Immortals slayed $12.3 million. Jack and Jill followed at No. 4 with $12 million. Puss in Boots completed the top five with $10.7 million, bringing its total to $122.3 million. In sixth place, Tower Heist looted $7 million. J. Edgar drew $5.9 million to rank at No. 7. Rounding out the top 10: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (No. 8, $2.9 million), In Time (No. 9, $1.6 million) and George Clooney's latest film, The Descendants (No. 10, $1.2 million, though at just 29 theaters).
